SERVICES

Copyediting, basic

This is the type of editing that a manuscript most often needs as it nears completion. I will spot problems with grammar, punctuation, spelling, and consistency of tense and voice. I will also suggest ways to polish problem areas to achieve clearer, more graceful prose. This service also includes checking for consistency of facts and references that are complete and conform to one of the commonly accepted styles, such as Chicago.

Comments and suggestions will be highlighted for your approval using the “track changes” feature of Word. (Hard-copy editing with good old-fashioned red pen is also available upon request).

Copyediting, heavy

Request an estimate for this service if, in addition to basic copyediting, you want your manuscript to receive closer attention to style and sentence construction. Heavier copyediting will also include some of the editorial feedback listed below under “substantive, structural, and stylistic editing.“ I will play a more active role than would be called for in basic copyediting, making suggestions for clarity and flow, as well as eliminating wordiness, repetition, and awkward phrasing. This option is also appropriate for manuscripts that require a considerable amount of fact-checking and/or reworking of references.

Comments and suggestions will be highlighted for your approval using the “track changes” feature of Word. (Hard-copy editing with good old-fashioned red pen is also available upon request).

Proofreading:

Writing that has already been polished still typically contains many lingering errors. Generally faster and less expensive per page than copyediting, proofreading is a final check for remaining mistakes in grammar, punctuation, spelling, style, and consistency. If a designer has already done page layouts, I can also check for problems and inconsistencies with all the design elements.

Substantive, structural, and stylistic editing:

This service is for manuscripts that have issues with structure and content that must be addressed before it is ready to be copyedited. For example, I can provide concrete suggestions to improve organization, strengthen arguments, firm up and clarify language, eliminate repetition, and/or tailor the writing to the reading level of your intended audience.

Indexing:

An index that includes the most relevant subjects and concepts in your book can make it far more user-friendly, and thus more attractive to publishers and readers alike. I can create the index according to your wishes in terms of length and content.
